About Ultrasound at Bayshore Medical Center
What is an ultrasound?
Sometimes called a sonogram, ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves to visualize internal structures so that dynamic images of tissues, organs, and blood movement are generated non-invasively and without the use of radiation. Using a piece of equipment called a transducer, movement over the skin picks up reflected waves, and a computer converts these electrical impulses into images so that radiologists may read and interpret the results.
Why has my doctor recommended an ultrasound?
There are a number of reasons why your doctor may have recommended an ultrasound. Most commonly ultrasound is used to measure and evaluate female pelvic organs for assessment of the size, shape, and position of the uterus and ovaries. Additionally, they may be used to diagnose and assist in the treatment of abnormalities of the uterus structures, fibroid tumors, masses, cysts, and other types of tumors within the pelvis, as well as for measurement and evaluation of pelvic organs for pelvic inflammatory disease, post-menopausal bleeding, and more.High resolution breast ultrasound is available through our Women’s Center.
